COMPANIONS

Agaves, aglaonemas, aloes, begonias, bromeliads, hoyas, ivies, kalanchoes, mosses, nerve plants, peperomias, pileas, pothos, prayer plants, rhipsalis, scheffleras, and snow roses

If you give this easygoing comedian a sunny position, it will grow like a maniac. Station it in indirect light and it will also grow pretty darn rapidly. Slight overwatering is okay, if you tend to err in that direction. Drastic underwatering can be a little more stressful for the vine and might even lead to dieback and leaf drop. I suggest providing sufficient root room to prevent frequent drying out. As for the other elements of cultivation, there is no need to go crazy with the fertilizer. Muehlenbeckia is native to New Zealand and Australia, which says a lot about its tolerance for poor soil. The only high-maintenance task might have to do with shearing. Don’t be afraid to vent all your scissorhand tendencies. Although the wiry stems look a little fragile, they will be fine with a stern haircut and will branch out as a result. And a maidenhair vine with a haircut will look a lot like a maidenhair vine that has been left to grow wild and woolly for a few weeks.
